The Digital Morphology Project, the CTLab and the Texas Advanced Computing Center have partnered to make available a number of exciting ways to browse, download, and analyze high-resolution X-ray computed tomography (HRXCT) data of biological and geological specimens. These data are produced at the NSF supported UTCT facility located on the University of Texas campus. Both biological and geological data are featured. The biological data is from the Digital Morphology Library (or Digimorph) and is a collection of records of biological specimens assayed over the past seven years. The geological objects comprise a wide range of materials scanned by scientists interested in both the structure and composition of earth materials. The Digital Morphology Library is part of the National Science Foundation Digital Libraries Initiative. It develops and serves unique 2D and 3D visualizations of the internal and external structure of living and extinct vertebrates, and a growing number of 'invertebrates'. The Digital Morphology library itself serves imagery optimized for Web delivery for almost 500 specimens contributed by more than 100 collaborating researchers from the world''s premiere natural history museums and universities. This web site will offer access to those data at much higher resolutions and with a variety of analytical tools for examining the data. This web site is hosted at the Texas Advanced Computing Center (TACC) and has been developed as part of our effort to provide data and information resources to the TeraGrid community. The technologies behind the site are Microsoft SQL Server 2000, Java, and PHP. We will be offering new and exciting methods to access the data using high-performance and grid-based technologies over the next year. |
